Motivation Jumpstart
How do you get motivated?
For some it’s the right music to get you going. For others it’s putting on a certain outfit and it doesn’t quite fit anymore. Or maybe it’s more "impactful" — like you can’t run around and play with your kids like you used to.
Regardless of what it is, the question then is — how do you make it stick?
How do you keep that motivational fire started?
Once that motivation kicks in, you’re typically raring to go … for about a week. Maybe two.
And then it trails off.
So how do you get a motivational jumpstart?
These 5 simple strategies can help.
- Clearly define your goals – whether it’s a certain body weight, body fat, pants size, etc. Make it clear and measurable, so anyone could understand it. This way you’ll know what you’re working towards … what get measured gets done!
- Write the steps to achieve the goals — writing goals is great, but be specific as to how you’ll get there. "I’ll eat a vegetable with every meal and fruits with each snack, for example." The more specific, the better.
- Change your routine — keep it interesting. No one likes to be stuck in a rut with the same old routine. Try unique foods and recipes. Try different exercises, intensities, walking paths, etc.
- Train with a friend – maybe it’s a group of like minded women, like in our Louisville boot camp, or maybe it’s just you and a friend. Accountability works, though. Take advantage!
- Take a picture – there is nothing more telling (and motivating) than a picture of yourself. Put it where you can see it daily to keep you plugging away!

Hi Chris and Kara! I have lost 56 pounds, 39″, 19% body fat and 5 sizes in the last year but have more work to do. How do you determine what the “right” weight, size, body fat comp is for you? I’m smaller size wise than I have ever been but weigh 25 pounds more with the increased muscle. I have “large bones” as they say and carry my weight well but I’m having challenges with figuring out what goal to set as far as where I need to be. Thanks!

Congratulations on your success!! Very impressive! Rather than focusing on what the “norms” should be, focus on how you feel, look, and fit into clothes. There’s no better “measurement” tool than the mirror — if you’re happy with you, perfect. Keep up the great work!

One of my motivational techniques is to watch others in the gym that are dedicated to working out, using good form and intensity. Imitation is the sincerest form of a flat stomach or something like that.
