Do You Workout on Vacation?
The Mohr Clan is headed off for vacation soon …
…a nice relaxing week at the beach. It’s going to be a blast with Ella, who hasn’t yet been to a beach — she’s been in pools and LOVES the water, but hasn’t yet experienced the ocean or beach sand.
We can’t wait and will definitely post some pictures from our adventures.
But vacation brings up an interesting question …
… what do YOU do when on vacation to stay on track?
Or maybe you don’t even think about clean eating and training when on vacation. You instead use it as a time to completely "veg out" and eat anything and everything in sight.
Let us know. The more comments, the better...
We’ll share our strategies later this week. But we want to know yours!

One lesson I learned from a recent trip to Vancouver, Canada (and a reaction to the general airlines trend of charging for each checked bag and for every conceivable thing onboard)… Really, really, REALLY scrutinize what you pack (do you really, really, REALLY need it? Can you mostly likely purchase it inexpensively at a discount store when you arrive at your destination? How about just packing and taking along the one on-board bag and maybe the small purse or backpack which generally you’re allowed to take on board – no waiting around for you at the baggage claim area since you’d already have your luggage with you when you exit the plane. Oh yes… in Vancouver, Canada… VERIZON WIRELESS CALLS CANNOT be made or received… ONLY TEXT MESSAGES COULD BE SENT OR RECEIVED and you may incurr roaming charges additionally! Word to the wise, check with you service provider before going to the airport, train station, etcetera…)

I try to use my surroundings to enhance my workouts. For example, if I am at the beach, I love to run or walk on the sand. I also enjoy biking and hiking and will do pushups, crunches, tricep dips, etc. Recently, I tried ValSlides and had a great workout, and they are light weight and portable for travel. Have a great trip!

I like to use the work out facility at the place I am staying. I take the stairs to the condo or hotel room vs. the elevator. If we are on the beach, I either get up early before everyone else and walk or run the beach and then come back and drink coffee watching the ocean. Or play lots of games on the beach with the kids, i.e. beach volleyball.

I cook a healthy dinner every night. My husband is rarely home before 7:00 when we are here so dinnertime can be chaotic. When we are away on vacation, he can play with the children while I fix a good, healthy meal made from produce picked up from the farm stands just outside of town. Exercise is trickier since there’s not a Crossfit affiliate nearby—I try to do burpees, pushups, situps, beach walking, etc. on my own. I look forward to reading your strategies!

It’s all in the planning. We just got back from FL and had a great relaxing vacation. We rented a home with a grill and backyard pool. I made sure to do some type of workout each day for 30 minutes. It ranged from a walk in the neighborhood, walking around Disney World or workout in the pool. If we ate at home we always made it on the grill with fresh fish purchased from the local Whole Foods. Keep plenty of water handy and stay away from the caffiene especially in the hot sun. Be prepared in the plane or car with fruits and veggies. If you have them already cut up and ready it’s easy to say no to the non-healthy snacks.

I vacation the same place every summer and probably work out harder there than anywhere else. I always pushed myself to improve my fitness right before going back to pre-season camp in college. I run hills in soft sand, play tennis everyday, and do push ups and sit ups several times a day. One of my favorite things to do is to dig huge hole in the sand and then bury my feet so I can do negative sit ups and back extensions. (The set up for this requires a little help from a friend). A friend just turned me onto your website and I love it. Thank you so much for your dedication to fitness. We are lucky to have you in Louisville!

my workouts in the gym are always pretty intense so when I go on holidays I take advantage of easier workouts, long brisk walks in the sand, volleyball and football in the pool and we always find the restaurant that is the farthest away from our room and that is where we go for lunch. So 2 hour walk on the beach in the morning, 1/2 hour walk for lunch and than some volleyball or football in the afternoon. Then of course some dancing in the disco at night. These are all fun things to do so I don’t even realize they are exercise.

I just got back from vacation. We tried to plan active sightseeing. We walked around museums and the National Aquarium along with biking along a picturesque town. In all it was a great way to get some relaxation AND exercise in at the same time.

We recently went to Disney for vacation. On vacation, I prefer not to get up early, so my husband and I took turns exercising while our 3 year old napped in the afternoon. There were walking paths around the hotel so after going for a walk/run, I did push-ups and sit-ups. While we didn’t do this every day. We did it 3 out of the 6 days and the other days we spent plenty of time walking the parks. And while we enjoyed some nice meals, we were both very sensible and split a lot of them. We also had healthy snacks in the room (greek yogurt, fruit, pistachios and almonds) that helped us stay away from the junk food. I researched the menus of various restaurants ahead of time and found places with healthy options. I’m happy to say that I returned weighing the same as when I left. I owe a big thanks to Boot Camp and the support offered through it for helping me get in the right mind set before I even left for vacation. Thanks Mohr family!
