Going Green for St Patty’s Day

"Being green" is all the rage — from eating local foods to the cars we drive, using different light bulbs to recycling.

Sticking with the theme of "being green" today in honor of St Patrick's Day, here are 7 "Green" Tips to help you lose weight forever and feel your best.

  1. Include more leafy greens in your diet each day — leafy greens like Swiss chard, kale, spinach, and collards.
  2. Eat more green veggies in addition to leafy greens — asparagus, Brussels sprouts, green cabbage, string beans
  3. Walk or bike more — instead of driving everywhere, walk or bike whenever you can to run daily errands.
  4. Eat locally — the closer to home a food is grown, the more nutrients, more flavor, and less fuel it takes to transport it to your plate.  Check out your area to find some farmers markets — it helps the local farms then too!
  5. Eat more vegetarian meals –  we aim to do this several times a week at our house.  It can be super healthy for you (when you make smart choices) and takes a lot less land to grow massive quantities of produce than it does meat.
  6. Eat more sustainable fish — funny to follow up eat more vegetarian meals with eat more fish, but fish are so incredible for you, it's hard to pass up.  But eating sustainable fish is important as research as shown many species are now being overfish — wild salmon is great, along with smaller fish like anchovies, sardines, and fish I learned about from dietitian friend, Kate Geagan, called Barramundi.
  7. Speaking of Kate, pick up a copy of "Go Green Get Lean" which she wrote. It's loaded with great info to get you on track with smart eating strategies.
