3 Favorite Heart Healthy Snacks

On the go doesn’t mean you have to turn to fast food and vending machines.

Here are 3 of our favorite snacks – quick, portable, convenient, and fantastic for your heart.

Sabra Hummus single serve.  Hummus is incredible for you.  And we were excited to recently find single serve hummus at the store.  It’s hard to find super convenient healthy foods that taste great, so this fits the bill.  Perfect for the office or when you’re waiting to pick up the kiddos in the carpool line.  Bring some baby carrots and there is zero prep needed!

Single serve Greek yogurt.  This is loaded with protein, high in calcium, and a perfect snack to fill you up, but not fill you out.

Add a handful of fresh or frozen fruit and the snack just got that much better.  You Chobani, Fage, and Okios are 3 people brands that most stores carry these days.

Snack size cottage cheese.  Breakstone’s makes a great on the go snack size cottage cheese – at just 90 calories per serving, this is great for a convenient on the go snack.  Add some fruit or use it as a base for whole grain crackers, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthy heart and smaller belly.

Is the health benefits of Greek yogurt that much better than plain yogurt? I've read so may articles lately glowing over Greek yogurt.

Both are good — Greek yogurt has double the protein and half the lactose (carbohydrate). BUT, yogurt as a whole is a great choice.

I'm a really big hummus fan and while Sabra is one of the best commercial brands, I really love Rainbow Bloosom's local version.  It's got a ton of garlic in it and it's kind of chunky and not pasty.  The greek yogurt's are really good and thicker than regular yogurt.  I've just tried Dannon's version, which is pretty good, as is Fage and there's another brand at ValuMarket called Greek God's.  Greek yogurt is super good as a spread on a sandwich/wrap (again, since it's so thick) and it's extra tasty in oatmeal in the morning with a little bit of honey and fresh fruit.

I use hummus instead of the standard peanut butter, cream cheese on celery sticks… it's great. It takes care of that "fix" I need when I want something crunchy.

I usually bring a 1/2 cup of oatmeal to work in a sandwich bag.  I'll sometimes combine that with 1 cup of blueberries (Which were in the freezer section of the grocery store).  The frozen blueberries are a great fruit addition which won't go off in your fridge if you leave it for too long.
I'll sometimes add a 1/4 cup of walnuts to the oatmeal for some healthy fats. These combinations make for a warm, nutritious snack any time of the day.  Thanks for all your articles Chris and Kara!!
