3 Tips to Party Proof Your Diet
I’m having a conversation with a woman in our boot camp this morning who was present, but struggling to be there.
She said she went out last night to a work party.
Couldn’t pull herself away from the buffet table and had just a few too many drinks. And certainly was feeling the effects of all of those.
Then she said "seriously, though, how can you even tell someone to stay on track during the holidays … why even try, it’s impossible with all the temptations!"
Is it REALLY impossible, though?
More challenging, yes. Impossible? Not so much…
I’ll first give this woman credit for showing up this morning. That’s step #1.
Enjoy your parties. Enjoy your holidays.
Just get right back on track the next day. Overindulging 1 day (think Thanksgiving) or 1 meal (think going to a party) won’t make or break you. It’s the times between all those parties that will.
In other words, Thanksgiving is 1 day. Will you eat and drink more than normal? Sure will. But when you’re back the next day, Thanksgiving just becomes 1 meal out of the 21+ you’re going to eat that entire week.
Does that make sense?
- So party proof your diet first by keeping your party foods and drinks limited to that day or night.
- Don’t hover over the buffet table like a 7th grade boy hovering over his first "love." Pick some foods off the table, then walk away with your plate. When you’re standing next to it, you’re going to overeat … and drink … and that’s when you get into trouble.
- Fight stress with exercise. Sure, there’s a lot to do during the holidays … but isn’t there always a lot to do? Make time for exercise daily, especially during more stressful times of your life. Most people turn to food or alcohol as a stress reliever … exercise is more effective and then you’ll have one less thing to stress over (the thought of not exercising). And you’ll feel better about having that extra dessert (or two).

I seem to remember a tip you gave last year that you haven’t mentioned. That is, eat “clean” (healthy snack or meal) BEFORE you go to the party so you won’t be as hungry when you get there. At the party look for the healthier choices like the veggie tray and keep the indulgences to a minimun.
Thanks Chris and Kara for your daily reminders. It helps to me to stay focused. We all have choices in life. It is up to each individual to choose wisely.
