If you
want to continue to be successful as a company, then you need to
make the health of your employees a priority! And Mohr Results, Inc
can help.
The Success of Your Company is Reliant on the Health of Your
Employees
Nationwide, the medical costs associated with obesity are staggering.
- In 2003, 5.7% of all adult medical expenses, or $75 billion,
were attributable to obesity.
In Kentucky, the numbers are even worse!
- In 2003, 6.2% of all adult medical expenses, or $1.1 billion,
were attributable to obesity.
The wealth of a company is determined by its product, its mission,
and its ability to respond to change and adapt. The health of
a company is determined by the health of its employees,
which ultimately ensures the continued success of the company.
Increasing your employees' health and well being can directly benefit
your work atmosphere, your productivity, and most importantly your
profitability!
Overweight and obesity have become public health epidemics in the
United States. It is estimated that over 66% of U.S. adults are overweight
and 32% are obese. Obese individuals have increased morbidity and
use of health services. Less is known about the effect of obesity
on workers' compensation. A study published in 2007, which included
nearly 12,000 health care and University employees demonstrated a
clear relationship between BMI and the rate of compensation claims,
associated costs, and lost workdays!

The authors of this publication concluded that “ Maintaining
healthy weight not only is important to workers but should also be
a high priority for their employers given the strong effect of BMI
on workers' injuries. Complementing general interventions to make
all workplaces safer, work-based programs targeting healthy eating
and physical activity should be developed and evaluated.”

Another publication in the September-October issue of issue of
the American
Journal of Health Promotion reported:
- Overweight and obesity - attributable costs were as high as $2,485
per year for grade-II obese female employees.
- The costs of obesity (not overweight) at a large firm with 1000
employees are estimated to be dollar $285,000 per year
- 30% of these astronomical costs are from increases in medical
expenses and absenteeism
- Increased medical costs are associated with the level of obesity
of the employees - although grade III obesity only represents 3%
of the employed population, it accounts for nearly ¼ of
these costs due to obesity.
- Approximately 30% of the total costs result from increased absenteeism,
and although those with grade-III obesity represent only 3% of
the employed population, they account for 21% of the costs due
to obesity.
